I snack. I’m not ashamed to admit it. I try to snack a bit less often, and I try to keep most of my snacks relatively healthy. But snacks definitely have a place in my life.

Delicious fro-yoFor a while I was on a mission to find those great tasting snacks that are still reasonable in terms of calories. And boy did I find some. Ever had Chapman’s Frozen Yogurt? Wow. It’s seriously tasty. I recently had some Caramel Pecan Crunch. I’m amazed that it tastes that good at only 140 calories per 1/2 cup serving. I was thinking that this is amazing – basically the same nutritional impact as boring old yogurt, but tastes like ice cream (seriously – it’s good). Obviously this has to be a regular snack item.

But sadly there is a problem.

It’s really hard to have just one serving. I buy the container with the intention of only eating one serving per snack. I start with one. But then I hear it calling my name from the freezer. It does this relentlessly. I have no choice but go get some more. And it turns out that if you have 4 servings of frozen yogurt while watching television, you’ve actually just eaten a 600 calorie snack. That’s a Big Mac. Yogurt on the other hand doesn’t speak my language, so I have a serving and am done with it.

So what do you do? Stay away from delicious but low-calorie food items? Definitely not. Just don’t bring large quantities into your house. Save the treats you can’t control for when you are out, or only bring home small, single size servings. And I’m not talking about a box of “100 calorie Oreos”. If you have any willpower issues, you’ll eat several of them in a very short time. You end up with the calories of a full size serving of Oreos, while paying almost twice as much for the smaller servings.

YogurtIf you are one of those people with willpower, then this concept doesn’t apply to you. Enjoy that one serving of delicious frozen yogurt. I envy you. But I know that I am not you, so I will stop bringing yummy frozen yogurt into the house in 2L buckets. And I will hope for the day that Chapman’s starts making smaller containers of their awesome frozen yogurt. I will also go to the grocery store and buy some un-frozen yogurt for snack time.
